Pastor's Devotional

Welcome to St. John's Church of Hollidaysburg. St. John's is a warm, caring fellowship of 200 members. In practice, we affirm The Dubuque Declaration.

The Dubuque Declaration proclaims:

(1) God is triune - Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

(2) Jesus Christ is truly God and truly man. He is like us in all aspects, apart from sin. We are all sinners, estranged from God. Jesus died on the cross to atone for our sin and reconcile us to God. He rose from the dead and reigns as sovereign over the whole creation. He is the Lord and Savior of us all, the sole head of the church. One day He will return in glory, power, and judgment to usher in the kingdom of God in its fullness.

(3) The Bible is the written Word of God, the infallible rule of faith and practice for the church. It has binding authority over all people. All other sources of knowledge sit under the judgment of the Word of God.

(4) The central message of the Bible is redemption through Christ's sacrifice on the cross and glorious resurrection from the grave. This salvation is the gospel, or good news. It is given by grace alone, and is received only by faith. This faith does not lay dormant, but gives rise to works of piety, mercy, and justice.

(5) It is the mission of the church to bear witness, in word and deed, to the love of God as expressed through Christ's atonement on the cross. We are sent into the world as disciples of Christ to glorify God in every area of life and to bring all peoples into submission to the Lordship of Christ, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. We seek to obey this commission in the full assurance that our Lord and Savior is with us always, even to the end of the age.

Like many churches, we are a very friendly congregation. But "friendly" only goes so far. The local YMCA, and several other organizations, are friendly too. We subscribe to the above doctrine, and we seek to live it. If you are looking for a church home that offers substance, and not just fluff, we encourage you to come to St. John's. You will not be disappointed.
